HISTORY
Tothenative peopleswholivedhere,Niagara Falls wasamystical place. Althoughnoneof
the inhabiting tribes left written records, their oral traditions tell of gods who lived behind
the mighty waterfall. By the time the British had expelled the French from this region in
1759, the Iroquois Indians were trading, working with, and fighting for (and against) the
European settlers. Until the American Revolution, the Iroquois kept most white settlers out
of the area; however, the Iroquois sided with the British during the conflict and were even-
tually forced from their lands for their opposition to the American cause.
