In-Depth Information
The treasures of the Niagara region are also found beyond the falls. North along the
gorge is Lewiston, a beautiful and historic town nestled at the base of the ridge where the
falls began 12,000 years ago. Lewiston is a place where the arts and culture flourish, with
a Norman Rockwellian main street that leads to the river and spectacular sunsets. Farther
north, Fort Niagara, the longest continually occupied military structure in North America,
stands sentinel as it has for nearly 300 years, guarding the confluence of the Niagara River
and Lake Ontario. Here, reenactors bring to life the history of the gateway to the New
World, the scene of bloodshed among Native American, French, and British combatants.
