THE ARTS
The Mount Carmel Chateau Park Art Centre (7021 Stanley Ave., 905/371-3922, ht-
tp://chateaupark.ca , 9am-4pm daily, tours $5-13, reservations required) is an oasis of tran-
quility and reflection, immediately adjacent to the buzz of Fallsview. The art center is part
of a larger retreat campus and monastery operated by the Carmelite Friars of the Mount
Carmel Monastery. The monastery is a work of art, built in 1894 and surrounded by 12
acres of gardens, lawns, and statues. The gallery offers an impressive number of paintings,
sculpture, and pottery by contemporary Canadian artists. If you take the self-guided tour
($5), allot one hour to view the art gallery and another hour to appreciate the building and
grounds. The chapel's stained-glass windows are truly magnificent.
Another gallery emphasizing the works of Canadian artists is the Niagara Falls Art
Gallery (8058 Oakwood Dr., 905/356-1514, www.niagarafallsartgallery.ca , 1pm-4pm
Mon.-Fri. July-Aug., noon-4pm Sat. Sept.-June, $5). The permanent collection features
many paintings by William Kurelek, who captured the lives of Canadians in the 20th cen-
tury on the country's great prairies. The John Burniak collection of falls-related art is a
must-see: It tells the stories of Niagara through the eyes of artists from the 1700s through
the present day. Take the McLeod Road exit (#27) off the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way)
heading east. Oakwood Drive is the first right turn after the exit. The gallery is about seven
minutes from the Fallsview area.

the year, the lights stay on until midnight.
The lights project soft colors onto the falls, creating an amazing, surreal effect. The best
place to appreciate the illumination is along the gorge rim, from the brink of the falls to the
