In-Depth Information
The second way to see the whirlpool is at Thompson's Point (Niagara Pkwy., dawn-
dusk daily, free), a spot unknown to many tourists. Thompson's Point affords a great view
of the Niagara River as it drops 50 feet in elevation, creating awe-inspiring rapids. It is the
perfectperchtoseethecounterclockwiseflowofthewaterastheriverentersthewhirlpool,
crosses underneath itself, and then completes its trip to Lake Ontario.
Thompson's Point has many of the same views as Colt's Point (where the aero car de-
parts from), but is less crowded and more panoramic. Thompson's Point is positioned so
that you can better observe the river as it enters and exits the whirlpool. From here, you
have a better sense of the entire natural system that creates the counterclockwise vortex. If
the aero car is operating, stand on the left side of the platform to feel the vibration of the
cable car's mechanism beneath your feet. The aero car pauses for a moment at Thompson's
Point before returning to Colt's Point.
Thompson's Point is easy to miss. Driving north on the Niagara Parkway, slow down as
you near the entrance for the Whirlpool Golf Course and Restaurant. Look for a small sign
for Thompson's Point just before a service road on your right, which leads to free parking.
Take a short walk to the observation area.
Glide 200 feet above the raging river aboard the Whirlpool Aero Car.
