Europeans explored the area beginning in the 1600s. The first written description of
Niagara Falls was by a Jesuit priest, Father Louis Hennepin, in December 1678. By the
1700s,France andEngland were fighting forcontrol ofthe region. English forces prevailed
and, in 1759, the French military finally departed.
