GETTING AROUND
The vast majority of visitors to Niagara arrive by car. Outside of Niagara Falls, Ontario,
public transportation is not robust and is designed to serve locals, not visitors.
In New York, I-90 is the main highway running east-west, from Albany to Buffalo.
In Buffalo, big-city traffic is virtually nonexistent, although congestion can occur during
weekday commute times. The statewide speed limit for open highway driving is 65 miles
per hour. Speed limits for cities, towns, villages, and smaller roads are considerably slower
and are posted. If visiting in the winter months, snow may make for less-than-ideal driving
conditions. Local radio stations and highway signs provide warnings and weather informa-
tion.
The main thoroughfare on the Canadian side of the border is Queen Elizabeth Way
(QEW), which joins the Niagara region to Toronto. The QEW's top posted speed limit
is 100 kilometers per hour (60 mph), although traffic moves faster the closer you get to
Toronto.Exceptforconstructionareas,thereisnotmuchtrafficintheNiagararegion.Most
of the traffic laws are the same for Canada as New York, except that radar detectors are not
legal.
Major car-rental companies operating out of the Buffalo airport include Alamo (800/
327-9633), Avis (800/831-2847), Budget (800/283-4387), Enterprise (800/736-8222),
Hertz (800/654-3131), and National (800/227-7368).
