views, beaches, and sunsets.
One of the major attractions in Port Dalhousie is the Lakeside Park Carousel (1 Lake-
port Rd., 905/934-1221, www.stcatharines.ca , 10am-9pm daily June-Aug.) This stunning
antiquecarouselwasdonatedtothelocalgovernmentwithonestringattached—thefarefor
riding the carousel could never be more than a nickel. That promise has been kept and, for
just five cents, you can hop aboard and ride upon any of 68 different animals.
The ride was originally built between 1898 and 1905 in Brooklyn. It has been lovingly
restored and maintained. Depending on the weather, visitors can spend an hour or more ex-
ploring the lighthouses, shops, and sights in Port Dalhousie.
Morningstar Mill
Step back in time with a visit to the Morningstar Mill (2714 Decew Rd., 905/688-6050,
www.morningstarmill.ca , 9am-1pm Tues. and Thurs., 10am-3pm Sat.-Sun. mid-May-Oct.,
free).Afteremigrating fromBavaria, WilsonMorningstar settled intheAmerican colonies.
Being a loyalist, he left the states and moved to Canada during the American Revolution.
Eventually, he purchased this tract of land near the Decew Falls and harvested the moving
water to power a grist mill.
Today,theoriginalMorningstarhouseandmillremain.Otherstructuresherearefaithful
reproductions of 19th-century agricultural buildings. You can tour the buildings as volun-
teer docents recount the story of the Morningstar family and life during the early 1800s.
The grounds are quite picturesque. Plan on spending an hour here. Call ahead to check if
the mill is open for tours, since it is staffed by volunteers and hours of operation can vary
day to day.
THOROLD
Just five minutes south of St. Catharines is the historic canal city of Thorold
( www.thoroldtourism.ca ) . It is here that the Welland Canal climbs up the Niagara Escarp-
ment.
MM Lock 7 Viewing Complex
The Lock 7 Viewing Complex (50 Chapel St. S., 905/680-9477, www.thoroldtourism.ca ,
9am-7:30pm daily July-Aug., 9am-4pm daily June and Sept., free) is perched atop the
Niagara Escarpment, which allows you to view Locks 4-7. From this vantage point, you
also can see Niagara Falls in the distance as freighters pass through the locks and climb the
