Chef Stephen Treadwell has a simple food philosophy. Prepare dishes with as few
ingredients as possible, and be sure they're locally sourced. This has been a recipe for
success at Treadwell Farm-to-Table Cuisine (114 Queen St., 905/934-9797,
www.treadwellcuisine.com , 11:30am-3pm and 5pm-10pm Wed.-Mon., $30). Treadwell's
restaurant has the feel of a modern bistro with small tables tightly packed and a serving
counter where patrons can watch food being prepared as they eat.

strip mall, the restaurant has no sign. Despite this, the Stone Road Grill is widely known by
locals as the best place to eat in NOTL. Inside, the restaurant is dark, eclectic, and perfect
for casual fine dining. As the menu changes to accommodate seasonally available ingredi-
ents, it is difficult to single out any specific dish for recommendation—they are all excel-

the restaurant. The grill's exterior signs read “REST,” the remnants of the previous owner's
restaurant sign. The new owners embraced the mistake and have not changed it since they
first opened in 2003.
GETTING THERE AND AROUND
Most motorists driving to Niagara-on-the-Lake from Niagara Falls take the Niagara Park-
way, which takes you directly to NOTL. There are other, more complicated routes that in-
volve highways and back roads, but they won't get you there any faster. Resign yourself to
driving 35 miles per hour and enjoy the scenic 25-minute ride.
Street parking in the main tourist area is metered, as are the five nearby public parking
lots. Rates are reasonable and range $1-1.50 per hour. Machines accept credit cards or Ca-
nadian coins, but not U.S. currency. A complete map of street parking and public parking
lots is online ( www.niagaraonthelake.com ) .
This area is easily navigated on foot. The main drag is Queen Street, where you'll find
many restaurants, shops, and theaters. The area of interest to visitors is roughly a seven- by
seven-block area bisected by Queen Street. There is a small public transit system in NOTL,

tion of the NOTL Transit System ( www.notl.org ) that may be of use for travelers. From
May-October, daily shuttle buses connecting the Old Court House and Fort George run
