RECREATION
Hiking
The granddaddy of Ontario hiking trails is the Bruce Trail ( http://brucetrail.org ), which
stretches 550 miles north of Queenston to Tobermory along Georgian Bay. The Bruce Trail
generally follows the Niagara Escarpment and is Canada's oldest and longest footpath. It's
also a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve that traverses public and private lands.
The Niagara section of the Bruce Trail covers an 11.5-mile route from Queenston to St.
Catharines through forested, rural, and urban areas. Hiking this portion of the trail will take
you past the Niagara River, along vineyards, and through mature forests as you ascend 40
feet in elevation. The Bruce is an out-and-back trail, so consider turning around where the
Bruce Trail intersects the Upper Canada Heritage Trail (at 2.6 miles on the Bruce Trail).
The Queenston to St. Catharines section of the Bruce Trail is well maintained and ac-
cessible for hikers of all levels. The southern terminus for the Bruce Trail is in Queenston
HeightsPark(14184NiagaraPkwy.).LookforacairninthemainparkinglotofQueenston
Heights, near the entrance roundabout, and follow the white blaze markers.
Cycling
The Vineyards & Blossoms Trail is a 25-mile bike route that gives an excellent overview
of NOTL. The route begins in the heart of NOTL, looping along the Niagara River Recre-
ationalTrail,theLakeOntarioWaterfrontTrail,andthroughmilesofvineyards.Shouldyou
desire a rest stop, there are eight wineries for you to investigate on this trail.
