All of Niagara-on-the-Lake is a stage during the Shaw Festival.
April-September, the stage is set in Niagara-on-the-Lake for the Shaw Festival
( www.shawfest.com , $24-117).TheShawFestivalstartedin1962andhasgrowntobecome
a major Canadian festival, drawing 250,000 people to performances each year. Each year,
at least 10 new productions are brought to the stages of four theaters in NOTL. The festival
isknownforencouragingingenioustwistsonexistingplays.Onesuchproduction,of Joan,
the story of Joan of Arc, portrayed the story as occurring during the Balkan conflicts of the
1990s. The Shaw Festival has attracted dignitaries like Queen Elizabeth II, Indira Gandhi,
and Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau.
