Queenston Heights provides a commanding view of the fertile plain that stretches to Lake Ontario.
Within the park, at the top of Brock's Monument (Queenston Heights Park, 905/
468-6621, www.friendsoffortgeorge.ca , 10am-5pm daily May-Aug., 11am-4pm Wed.-Sun.
Sept.-Oct. 13, $4.50 adults, $3.50 children 6-16) is another magnificent vista. Reaching
the top of the 185-foot monument involves climbing a seemingly endless circular staircase,
which requires some maneuvering to accommodate visitors who are descending (there is
no elevator). The journey is worth it, but be advised that it is equal to climbing 18 stories'
worth of stairs.
Brock's Monument is dedicated to the audacious general, Isaac Brock, who died while
rallying his troops to repel the invading American forces during the Battle of Queenston
Heights. Brock turned the tide of the battle in favor of the British; he is regarded as “the
hero of Upper Canada.” Just outside the monument, there are interpretive plaques that tell
the story of the Battle of Queenston Heights, as well as a memorial to Laura Secord, anoth-
er hero of the War of 1812.
