port, 716/439-5253, www.springlakewinery.com , noon-5pm daily, $3 tasting fee). Before
it was a winery, Spring Lake was a gravel pit. The Varallo family saw the potential of the
pit and purchased 78 acres of land surrounding the excavation. The pit filled with natural
spring water and is now a small lake with a beautiful vista for wine tasting, picnics, and
weddings. The land's unique sandy soil is best suited to growing riesling grapes. Spring
Lake's Rieslings have won medals at tasting competitions nationally and internationally.
Visitors can walk among the vines, see the processing machinery, and explore the pastoral
area around the lake. The lakeside gazebo is a picturesque place to sip wine or to host a
wedding. When enough staff is available, informal tours of the grounds are offered.
