NewYorkStateissecondonlytoCaliforniainAmericangrapeproduction.Formanyyears,
the farmers of this area were able to grow peaches, apples, and table grapes. It wasn't un-
til the 1990s that winegrowers began to seriously cultivate grapes for wine. The Niagara
Wine Trail ( www.niagarawinetrail.org ) has blossomed into a region supporting nearly 20
wineries. After the Wisconsin glaciation ended, some 11,000 years ago, it left behind soil
perfect for growing temperamental wine grapes.
Thewineries areasdiverse asthevintages theycreate, withsomefocusingonhandcraf-
ted traditional wines, while others experiment with wines made from apples, apricots, and
cherries.
