Erie Canal opened.
Locks 34 and 35 are the main attractions. They are located in the heart of Lockport,
where Pine Street crosses over the canal. You can observe the locks in action from either
side of the canal. The west side features a bike path accessible from Canal Street. This path
affordsagreatviewofthenewlocks,aswellasoldlocksthatarenolongeroperationaland
actasaspillway.Observingfromtheeastsideofthecanalisthebestwaytoexperience the
new locks up close as they gently raise and lower the boats. As you walk over the canal on
Main Street (heading southwest), you will travel over the widest bridge in North America
(399 feet wide, but only 129 feet long).
