PARKS
Frederick Law Olmsted described Buffalo as “the best planned city, as to its streets, public
places, and grounds, in the United States, if not in the world.” Olmsted and his partner Cal-
vert Vaux planned an ideal cityscape with large parks and beautiful, broad, tree-lined park-
ways. Most of that envisioned park system remains today.
Delaware Park (199 Lincoln Pkwy., 716/886-0088, www.bfloparks.org , dawn-dusk
daily) is the crown jewel of Buffalo's park system. Like New York City's Central Park, it
was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and it serves as a cultural and recreational meet-
ing place. Delaware Park has 350 acres of meadows, woods, and water. It is bordered by
the Museum District, Forest Lawn Cemetery, and the Buffalo Zoo. The park includes an
18-hole public golf course, 17 tennis courts, three playgrounds, six soccer fields, and two
lawn-bowling courts. Ring Road encircles the golf course and playing fields, providing an

FREDRICK LAW OLMSTED'S LEGACY
Regarded as the “Father of American Landscape Design,” Frederick Law Olmsted
left an indelible mark upon the city of Buffalo and its people. Olmsted is widely re-
