The arts scene in Buffalo is thriving, thanks to innovative programming and increased
private support after government subsidies shrank over the past few years. The Albright-
Knox Art Gallery (1285 Elmwood Ave., 716/882-8700, www.albrightknox.org ,
10am-5pmTues.-Sun.,$12)isamedium-sizedgallerywithanimpressivecollectionofcon-
temporary art, including works by Warhol, Pollock, and Gorky. You will also find pieces
by Picasso, Gauguin, Van Gogh, and Matisse. Admission is free on the first Friday of some
months,butyou'llwanttocallinadvancetoseewhentheFirstFridayprogramisoperating
during your visit, as its months of operation vary each year.
Just across the street from Albright-Knox, on the Buffalo State College campus, is
the Burchfield Penny Art Center (Buffalo State College, 1300 Elmwood Ave., 716/
878-6011, www.burchfieldpenney.org , 10am-5pm Tues.-Wed., and Fri.-Sat., 10am-9pm
Thurs., 11am-5pm Sun., $10 adults, $8 seniors, $5 students). The art center's mission is to
showcase works of local artists, the foremost being the watercolors of Charles Burchfield,
known for townscapes and nature paintings. The center is an incubator for local artists and
displayseclectic artwork,includingsculpture,drawings,andphotography.Activemembers
of the U.S. military and their families are admitted for free.
Kleinhans Music Hall (3Symphony Circle, 716/885-5000, www.kleinhansbuffalo.org )
is a treat for the eyes and the ears. The rounded building is a beautiful 1940s collaboration
of famed Finnish architects Eliel and Eero Saarinen. The acoustics are world-renowned,
providing an excellent environment for enjoying the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra
( www.bpo.org ) or contemporary music acts. Parking is a challenge, so arrive early to find a
spot in the adjacent lot.
Step back into the regal 1920s by catching a show at Shea's Performing Arts Center
(646 Main St., 716/847-1410, www.sheas.org ) in the heart of Buffalo's theater district. A
National Historic Site, Shea's hosts Broadway musicals, dramatic productions, ballets, live
music performances, and top-notch comedy acts. The theater's design is reminiscent of the
grand European opera houses of the 17th century. The interior design by Louis Comfort
Tiffanyincludesmassivecrystalchandeliers,ahugemarblelobby,andbeautifulgrandstair-
cases.
