State Park and follow the path to the rim of the gorge (with a beautiful view of the whirl-
pool). Continue in a clockwise direction on the path and in less than half a mile, you'll find
stairs marking the start of the trail.
Hennepin Park is the site of free concerts.
A little farther north along the gorge is the 2.5-mile Devil's Hole Trail (716/284-5778,
www.nysparks.com , dawn-dusk daily mid-May-Nov., free). This trail is a moderate one,
withapproximately 300stone stairs toclimb. Upondescending them, you'llsee theDevil's
Hole Cave, a natural feature shrouded in legend (and, sadly, covered in graffiti). The lime-
stone cave is safe to enter, but watch for trash and broken bottles discarded here. Be care-
ful: Indian legend says that any person who enters the cave is destined for tragedy! Should
you survive the cave's curse, continue down the stairs to the stone picnic tables. This is a
greatspotforarestorsnack,butremember topackoutallyourtrash.Thetrail windsalong
the gorge floor and boasts excellent views of the lower rapids of the Niagara River, gi-
ant boulders, and lightly wooded areas. Heading south along the river path, you'll arrive at
stairs that ascend to Whirlpool State Park. Once topside, head back (north) along the Gorge
Rim Trail before arriving back at Devil's Hole Park and the end of the loop.
