Festivals and Events
SUMMER
In summer, the Lewiston Council on the Arts (716/754-0166, www.artcouncil.org ) spon-
sors free blues concerts in Hennepin Park at the gazebo (4th and Center Sts., Lewiston)
at 7pm on Mondays. If you need to cheer up after the blues, come back on Wednesdays to
hear the seven-piece Lewiston Jazz Project—also at 7pm and free.
In August, the Lewiston Art Festival (716/754-0166, www.artcouncil.org , free) draws
more than 175 artists who display more than 20,000 pieces of art. The festival is so large
that Center Street is closed to traffic from 4th to 8th Streets for the weekend. Look for a
visitors booth at 5th and Center Streets for information on exhibitors.
FALL
In early September, the Niagara County Peach Festival ( www.lewistonkiwanis.org , free)
is the largest festival in the county, with amusement rides, a parade, and cooking contests.
During the three-day fest, various peach confections can be purchased, a Peach Queen is
crowned, and judges inspect the chins of young men to find the best peach fuzz. There is
also live music and a shuttle bus service.
Lewiston's Marble Orchard Ghost Walks (476 Center St., www.artcouncil.org . , 7pm
Sat. Sept.-Oct., $15) are a real scream! Local actors present the ghoulish past of Lewiston's
former residents inside the Marble Orchard. A costumed guide leads you through this
family-friendly haunt recounting the burning of Lewiston, mysteries of the Underground
Railroad, and other events, such as the disappearance of the man who threatened to reveal
the secret rituals of the Freemasons.

Hiking and Biking
The Whirlpool Rapids Trail (Whirlpool State Park, off Robert Moses Pkwy., 716/
284-5778, www.nysparks.com , dawn-duskdailymid-May-Nov.,free)isadifficult1.4-mile
trail with stairs, wooded paths, and some boulders to navigate. The hike is well worth the
effort, as it takes you down to the water's level and up close to the class VI rapids and the
whirlpool.Usecaution,asthewhirlpoolandrapidsareunforgivingtopeoplewhoaccident-
ally fall in. The trail is open to hikers 8 years and older. Alcoholic beverages, camping, and
fires are prohibited. Tofind the trailhead, exit out the back ofthe stone shelter in Whirlpool
