As you travel along the rim of the gorge, be aware of your footing. Some spots have
washed out and present a hazard. Keep children close by, as the gorge is steep and unfor-
giving. At the path's end, you have a view of the more serene part of the river as it flows
north toward the power plants and eventually Lake Ontario.
The path completes a circuit (0.3 mile), leading you back to the shelter where you star-
ted. There are many picnic tables and grills here, along with interpretive materials, signs,
restrooms, and a water fountain. You'll find Whirlpool State Park an ideal place to picnic
and enjoy a wonder of nature.
Devil's Hole State Park
The ominously named Devil's Hole State Park (Robert Moses Pkwy. and Rte. 104, 716/
284-5778, www.nysparks.com , dawn-dusk daily mid-May-Nov., free) is a partly wooded,
42-acre park. It sits upon the remnants of an ancient stream that poured over the wall of the
