In-Depth Information
As the EU has become increasingly active in international trade and environment pol-
itics it has supported the inclusion of trade-related measures in a host of environmental
agreements on hazardous wastes, hazardous substances and biodiversity protection
(Schreurs et al., 2009). Of course, it is also highly active in the WTO. The EU will con-
tinue to be a major actor in international politics of trade and the environment.
Consistent with past actions, the EU can be expected to pursue the uploading of many of
its developing environment policies and standards in a host of international forums. At
the same time, the Commission and individual member states will have to ensure that
their developing protection standards are fully compliant with WTO and other global
regulations.
