Today's cruise ship passengers land in Skagway then catch a train excursion along this
route to Whitehorse. All the gorgeous alpine scenery the eyes can absorb without an ounce
of effort. Kind of like us in the van!

Today the Chilkoot Trail is a tough 3-5 day hike that is one of those rite-of-passage treks
for hardcore backpackers. The trail begins just outside Dyea, a 53 km/ 33 mi trail of tor-
ture. A friend did it several years ago and said that while it is not all that arduous, rain is
traditional and sure enough, she endured five solid days of water down her neck and mud
in her boots - in the bloody cold.
Reminds me of the Milford Track in New Zealand. Which I don't mind saying I did NOT
hike. But I did sit on the pier and watch all the muck-covered trekkers drag themselves off
the transit boat, muttering about thigh-deep sinkholes and waist-deep creek-crossings.
