Klondike Highway
Our destination today is Skagway, Alaska via the White Pass/Klondike Highway. The 160
km /100 mi road is renowned for being one of the most scenic highways in North America.
I would not argue with that.
When I was in Whitehorse for that that afore-mentioned conference it was March. A col-
league and I arrived a few days early so we could rent a car to drive up over the pass to
Skagway and back. That early in the spring we didn't see all that much of the terrain be-
cause the landscape was blanketed by snow - Including the road. The trip became a bit of
a nail biter because as we approached the summit at White Pass the snow really started to
fly. I started mumbling about turning back but the colleague, a non-driver, insisted we keep
going,
“We are over half way there!”
Yes, we were half way but there is only one road to and from Skagway. You climb to the
1000 m / 3292 ft summit at White Pass after which you descend all the way back down to
