The Yukon
On the road by 7am, we are rewarded with more wildlife - black bears, moose, deer and
several herds of buffalo. The bears were munching grass at the side of the highway. They
didn't mind if we slowed down but if we stopped they usually beetled off. But at a rest stop
we were just about to pull away when we spotted a chubby good-ole-boy munching clover
beside the parking lot.
We rolled over, ever-so-slowly, snapping photos the closer we got. The bear looked up and
posed, totally unconcerned. We crept closer and closer till we could have touched him if we
had leaned out of the van. Close enough. Two hundred photos later…
The road from Muncho Lake to Watson Lake in the Yukon Territories is a lovely drive
through mountains, alongside lakes. At KM 765, keep an eye out for Liard River Hotsprings
Provincial Park. A short boardwalk leads through steaming marshes to several pools with
temperatures that range from 42° C (108° F) to 52° C (126° F). The wetlands support many
different kinds of plants including 14 orchid species that survive this far north strictly be-
cause of the hotsprings. Moose love to feed here as do grizzly bears. In fact, the second pool
