In-Depth Information
Three things to do at the WAC Bennett Dam:
1) Walk around the site, taking in the aforementioned dinosaur footprints and the scenic
view of the 1,773 sq km Williston Reservoir. You can drive across the dam itself, then up
the other side of the canyon to view this beautiful man-made lake. It's a well-used recre-
ation area, particularly for canoeists who steer clear of the generating plant's intake pipes.
2) Have a good look around the Visitors Centre. With 3-D models, touch-and-try exhibits
and an excellent movie called Canyon of Destiny, they've done a good job of explaining
how they built the dam and generate hydro-electric power.
3) Pay a modest $3 (for seniors 55+) to take a one-hour bus tour down into the dam. A
well-trained young woman explained everything we will ever need to know about spinning
turbines. Two of the ten onsite turbines were being serviced, lying in pieces on the floor
below the viewing platforms. It was an unusual opportunity to actually see right down into
them.
A few days later we heard about a couple of canoeists at another dam that were sucked
down the intake pipes into the turbines. Having seen those things spinning without their
lids on, it's an image I am blocking because the word that comes to mind is blender.
