ranches, supply centers and homesteads sprang up behind them, evolving eventually into
small towns that define the route we are actually traveling today.
Following that trail we head north from Hope stopping at a rest area near Cache Creek for
a picnic. The sky is blue, the lupins are bluer and we hug ourselves with the joy of it. Life
does not get better than this - lunch at the lake on the first day of our long-anticipated trip
to Alaska.
Continuing north we follow the canyon, stopping occasionally to photograph the mighty
Fraser, frothing into whitewater rapids as it drops some 280 feet between Lytton and Yale.
At a geological formation known as Hell's Gate the river torrents through narrow rock
faces, the walls barely 100 feet apart in places. The Hell's Gate Air Tram transports visitors
directly over the rapids to the attractions beyond. Well, shops actually. It's a bit touristy but
there is a fudge shop with a dozen flavours that I can personally recommend. There is a
suspension bridge you can hang over. Feel the spray of the rapids in your face while you
