BUGs
I am referring primarily to noseeums, flies and mosquitoes. I found them to be a “some-
times” kind of issue. Most places we saw few bugs and wondered what the fuss was about.
But on those occasions when we did, holy cow! The flies are so HUGE the locals call them
bulldogs. They bite hard and it HURTS! There seems to be no logic to when mosquitoes
arrive and how long they stay but when they do, they come in swarms that are reported to
have driven early settlers to suicide. I can understand that.
We've developed a multi-channel approach to dealing with bugs:
The Bug Hut
This is a two-person screen pop-up that I bought end-of-season last year for $19. It looks
like a flat disk but with the flick of a wrist it springs into this cunning little screened hut. Just
the right size for two chairs and a small table. Many evenings this truly was our refuge, the
mosquitoes and horseflies battering at the screen, desperate for a nibble off our sweets bods.
