located behind a kind of community center. Everything was very overgrown with grass and
untended looking. We did not stay long. A little further up the road, Kitwancool is said to
have totems that are over a hundred years old.
The tourism brochures make a big deal about how you can participate in the local culture
of these places. I don't really see how. The only open facility I saw was the gas station/
general store. I went in to see if there was something in the area to do; like along the lines
of “participate in the local culture.” Everyone there was buying slushies so I bought us
a couple too. I tried to strike up a conversation but the answers were monosyllabic so we
took our slushies and hit the road.
The Stewart Cassiar Hwy (#37) actually ends here, intersecting with Hwy #16. There are
two options: east to Prince George or west to Terrace, Prince Rupert and the Queen Char-
lotte Islands.
