In-Depth Information
Just a few km down the road we pass through the US border at Hyder. This funky little
town is known for its bars and bears. The permanent human population hovers between 60
and 100, depending on what you read.
At the Run-a-Muck RV park the proprietor cocks one eye at the bright blue sky above and
tells us to get back out on the road and keep driving up the Granduc Road, past the Fish
Creek Wildlife Viewing area to Salmon Glacier. It's about 40 km /25 mi of rough gravel
but worth every bump and rattle. This goat track winds its way up, down and around the
Salmon River till it pops up over top of the Salmon Glacier. From there we were driving
directly alongside or above this massive moving ice field. Normally we mortals look UP at
glaciers so this perspective was very unusual.
Being us, we have to see where the road really ends, so we continued on to explore the
area around the Granduc Copper Mine which ceased operation in 1984. Beyond that, the
road thrusts out into the wilderness opening into a vast valley that stretches forever into the
mountains beyond. There is a profound stillness to these places where so few people go.
