We spent the next day in Atlin, a lot of it just sitting on the lakeshore, transfixed by the
constant coming and going of the floatplane in front of us. The cyclist who was camped
beside us left this morning. He'd been resting up here for a few days and said this is a good
place to hide out and do nothing because there is NOTHING to do. Have to admit, Atlin is
on the long side of mellow but I think he missed some good stuff.
Atlin Lake, which is BC's largest natural lake, has some interesting features. The big island
in the middle of the lake is called Teresa Island. The mountain on this island, called Birch
Mountain, has the distinction of owning the record for highest elevation (1875 m /6153
ft) of any fresh water island in the world . The lake, the island and the surrounding area
are all part of Atlin Provincial Park and Recreation Area. It contains the Llewellyn Glacier
which joins onto one ofthe continent'slargest ice fields, the Taku (Juneau) Glacier.Juneau,
Alaska is just the other side of the lake/mountains.
Atlin Mountain, which towers over the lake, hosts a unique geological formation, the Atlin
Rock Glacier. It might look like just another glacier. At this time of year, free of snowfall,
these glaciers sometimes present a bit of a dirty face with their embedded dirt and gravel.
