During the 1970s and 80s petroleum exploration in the region created employment and in-
vestment opportunities but these companies pulled out in the early 1990s. Some activity
has resumed in the past ten years.
Although we are 200 km /125 mi north of the Arctic Circleit is t-shirt warm. In fact, sum-
mer temperatures here get up to 32°C (90°F). Mind you, the winter temps drop as low as
minus 56°C (-71°F). It's hard to conjure up a sense of that kind of cold, sitting here in the
evening sun with bare arms at 10 pm.
There is more to Inuvik than many of the towns we've been through in the north. For
starters, the row housing is a pleasant shock to the eye - much of it clad in vibrantly col-
oured siding - like purple and egg-yolk yellow and emerald green.
