na they fly in to base camp at the Kahitna Glacier (2200 m/ 7200 ft). It's a bustling little
town in the summer, a great place to people watch as the climbers make their preparations
and/or come off the mountain, sunburnt and bearded.
The climbing season runs from April to early July. During those months park's rangers tent
out on the mountain, basically standing guard over the environment, but also on the spot to
help climbers in trouble. They move off in early July because by then the snow has become
so soft that it is too dangerous to cross crevasses.
