Copper Center
Leaving Valdez this morning we stopped to appreciate Keystone Canyon, a gorge cut
through the mountains by the Lowe River. There are some beautiful waterfalls there and the
waters rushing through the canyon are renowned for white-water rafting.
Further up the Richardson Hwy (Hwy #4) we came to the Copper Center and its old road-
house. In years past, these roadhouses figured as the center of social life. Through the end-
less night of a frozen winter, dogsleds flew over the ice-bound river bringing lonely pro-
spectors and settlers to the roadhouses for mail, for supplies, for human contact.
