whales and the big fat Stellar sea lions lolling about on the buoys at sea and gathering in
writhing masses on the beaches.
Right in front of us a humpback whale breached, a full-body leap out of the ocean, 20-30
times. Over and over, he fluked then dove. Finally he must have tired of the jumping but
before speeding away spent at least five minutes waving goodbye to us with his side flip-
per. I've seen a lot of whales in the wild but I've never seen one so intent on showing off
his athletic prowess. The naturalist onboard was pretty awestruck too. It was the highlight
of our whole trip north.
