Samme now lives in Thousands Oaks, California but told me she travels back to Alaska
most summers. She loves meeting people and talking about her life as a young woman in
the north. She also said she was writing another book about the north called “Moonlight
Madness.” Sure enough. I just checked and it's listed in the online book stores as being
published in 2009.
We found all the museums in the north to be very real, their collections assembled by
townspeople with the authentic memorabilia of settlers and prospectors. These are not the
sterile museums of the south with their professionally scripted displays. The signage here
is more likely to be in the handwriting of the person who donated the item and the docent is
probably her son or grandson. They have real connections to the displays and strong opin-
ions about the politics of the north.
