Star Street, Paddington: view down an alley
Off the road are stucco terraces that lead gradually to the more Italianate Bayswater,
and there are humble little streets like Star Street. This is a perspective of cheaper terraced
houses in brick and stucco. Sharp sudden fights blow up here between urchins and between
dogs. Children escape by a hairsbreadth from the wheels of cars, and all along the street on
summer evenings, elbows can be seen resting on window-ledges, behind the plant pots. In
streets like Star Street, all over London, the householders have an eye for growing things.
The areas are highly cultivated with ferns, plants, and Virginia creeper. My illustration was
a delight to draw; there was speckled laurel in boxes, geraniums and campanula, and the
window-ledge of the parlour was heavy with plants in art nouveau pots. In this arbour,
budgerigars winked beady eyes at the Paddington sky, with musical accompaniment by the
