Underneath the gaslight's glitter
Stands a little fragile girl

Lower down the Strand, and on the other side, is Mooney's Irish House, full of mirrors and
gold lettering. A few yards away is a modern building occupied by a shoe firm - Romano
House, on the site of the restaurant. I remember Romano's, though not, unfortunately, in
its heyday when long ago Romano's shared with the old Café Royal the reputation of be-
ing the gayest in town. George Edwardes and his Gaiety girls supped here and poor Bessie
