Trip Description
From its trailhead on Highway 1, the Salmon Creek Trail climbs a moderate grade
along the south bank of Salmon Creek toward the clearly audible falls. In 0.1 mile
you'll reach the unmarked Salmon Creek Falls Trail junction (0.1 mile, 230'). No
matter where you're headed, don't miss the 200-foot spur to the base of the falls,
which winds past fragrant bays and large mossy boulders amid the cool mist.
After exploring the falls, carefully retrace your steps to this junction if you're
bound for Spruce Creek Camp, the Spruce Creek Trail, or Estrella Camp. Don't be
taken in by the heavily used, steep spur that continues up Salmon Creek to rocky
promontories above the falls. Many hikers (perhaps misreading the USFS map that
shows the trail following the river's course) mistake this spur for the Salmon Creek
Trail, following it until it disappears into oblivion a mile upstream.
