SALMON CREEK TRAIL TO SPRUCE CREEK & ESTRELLA CAMPS
LENGTH AND TYPE: 6.5-mile out-and-back or 6-mile point-to-point (Coast Ridge Road)
RATING: Moderate to strenuous
TRAIL CONDITION: Clear to difficult, poison oak, overgrown trail conditions past Spruce Creek Camp
HIGHLIGHTS: Follow mossy, forested Salmon Creek to impressive waterfalls, majestic oak woodlands,
and vibrant spring wildflowers on the upper slopes.
TO REACH THE TRAILHEAD: The signed Salmon Creek Trailhead is at the tight bend in
Highway 1, 8 miles south of Gorda, 27 miles south of Big Sur Station, 1.5 miles north
of the posted San Luis Obispo County line, and 3.7 miles north of Ragged Point. Park
at wide turnouts on either side of Highway 1. There are no facilities or water at the
trailhead.
TRIP SUMMARY: This route offers several day-hike and overnight options. Don't miss
the 0.2-mile round-trip day hike along Salmon Creek to Salmon Creek Falls. Though
the falls are visible from the highway, be sure to brave the crowds on this popular
trail. Another spectacular day-hike destination is Upper Salmon Creek Falls, 2.6 miles
up the Salmon Creek Trail, between Spruce Creek and Estrella Camps. A short, steep
unmarked spur leads down to the thundering falls, which cascade over large moss-
covered boulders into an iridescent pool. Pause for an invigorating swim in spring and
summer. Expect a quick dip, as water temperatures reach the high 50s Fahrenheit at
best.
Backpackers can hike 2 miles to Spruce Creek Camp or 3.25 miles to Estrella
Camp for year-round camping in the heart of the Salmon Creek drainage. Base yourself
at either camp for day hikes farther into the wilderness. One favorite destination is
Dutra Flat along the San Carpoforo Trail (see TRIP 74 Dutra Flat & San Carpoforo
Camps ).
Heavily overgrown trails and prevalent poison oak near Coast Ridge Road may
limit your loop trip options. Trails descending from Coast Ridge Road are also in poor
condition, as is the road itself in places. While the roadbed from the unmarked Willow
Creek Road/Los Burros Road junction is sound, encroaching brush will scratch even
the narrowest vehicles. Fallen trees, washouts, and heavy rains may make the road im-
passable. Check with the US Forest Service before attempting to drive the road (see
Phone , for contact information).
