HIGHWAY 1 TO BUCKEYE CAMP
LENGTH AND TYPE: 9-mile out-and-back or 7.9-mile point-to-point
RATING: Moderate to strenuous
TRAIL CONDITION: Clear to difficult, poison oak
HIGHLIGHTS: In spring, sprawling Buckeye Meadow boasts a carpet of colorful wildflowers.
TO REACH THE TRAILHEAD: The Cruikshank Trailhead is on the east side of Highway
1, 0.6 mile south of the Villa Creek bridge, 66 miles south of Carmel, and 4.5 miles
north of the abandoned Salmon Creek Station. Park at the small turnout on Highway 1
adjacent to the trailhead. There are no facilities or water at the trailhead.
TRIP SUMMARY: This route to Buckeye Camp via the Cruikshank and Buckeye Trails
is ideal in spring, when wildflowers and other budding plants blanket the open mead-
ow. The trails are passable, though poison oak and washouts are common in places.
Other options include a 4.4-mile round-trip to Cruikshank Camp (trails are clear
and well maintained) or, if you can arrange a shuttle vehicle, the 7.9-mile point-to-
point trek from the abandoned Salmon Creek Station to the lower Cruikshank Trail-
head (refer to TRIP 72 Salmon Creek Station to Buckeye Camp ).
