VICENTE FLAT TRAIL
LENGTH AND TYPE: 4.8-mile out-and-back or 7.7-mile point-to-point
RATING: Moderate
TRAIL CONDITION: Clear to passable, poison oak
HIGHLIGHTS: Follow a narrow band of old-growth redwoods along sheer Hare Canyon.
TO REACH THE TRAILHEAD: The marked trailhead is on the west side of Cone Peak
Road at mile 3.7 near a small turnout for up to five cars. There are no facilities or water
at the trailhead.
TRIP SUMMARY: The Vicente Flat Trail descends 7.7 miles from Cone Peak Road to
Highway 1. You can approach the trail as either an out-and-back or point-to-point hike.
If you can arrange a shuttle vehicle, start from Cone Peak Road. This downhill route
offers tremendous views of the coast, the sheer canyon, redwoods, and rolling golden
savannas. The 4.8-mile out-and-back to Vicente Flat Camp is an excellent day hike or
weekend trip.
Although you can hike the trail year-round, it can get quite cool and damp in the
shady canyon in winter. Spring brings colorful wildflowers and new growth to the open
slopes. Summer fog often obscures coastal views, while moderate fall temperatures
keep fog banks well offshore.
