In-Depth Information
Fringed with poison oak, the trail heads north through open grasslands, skirting
just east of a private residence. After 100 yards, you'll cross a small shady gully past
scrapped cars and make your way around a large fallen tanoak. The trail crosses a
second shallow redwood-lined gully, briefly follows an abandoned roadbed, and skirts
around a downed bay tree in another shallow gully. You'll cross several more gullies,
slippery with leaves from numerous dead or dying tanoaks afflicted by sudden oak
death, which has killed these trees by the thousands (see sidebar ) . Flags may hang
from dead limbs and branches, marking the vanishing trail.
