Trip Description
Although the DeAngulo Trail does not officially begin along the private road, the
trail description and mileage is measured from Highway 1 (600').
The road crosses through an open gate and ascends wide switchbacks past two
private driveways. You'll climb past fragrant, invasive eucalypti and dense thickets of
sage, lupine, poison oak, golden yarrow, and coyote brush to dense oak woodlands,
where the road forks (0.6 mile, 1410'). The right fork switchbacks up a private drive-
way 0.1 mile to a locked gate. You'll veer left through a second open gate (0.7 mile,
1450') and pass a dilapidated sign assuring hikers that the trail does eventually begin.
After a few minutes, the road passes another private residence, then switchbacks past
three more private driveways. Continue climbing through a hairpin right turn to the
signed DeAngulo Trail junction (1.8 miles, 1600'), a thousand feet above Highway
1.
