Trip 61
HIGHWAY 1 TO COAST RIDGE ROAD
LENGTH AND TYPE: 7-mile out-and-back
RATING: Challenging
TRAIL CONDITION: Difficult, poison oak
HIGHLIGHTS: Clear days along Coast Ridge Road reveal 50 miles of coastal views. If fog shrouds the
coast, gaze east to marvel at Ventana's nearly mile-high peaks.
TO REACH THE TRAILHEAD: This route begins along a private road on the east side of
Highway 1, 7.9 miles south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and 3 miles north of Julia
Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Turn east off Highway 1 and park along the road without
blocking access. The road continues as a private driveway, restricted to vehicles but
open to hikers. After 1.1 miles, the road curves right to the signed, gated DeAngulo
Trailhead.
TRIP SUMMARY: The lightly used DeAngulo (day-an-GOO-low) Trail climbs to dra-
matic views along Coast Ridge. Be prepared to face diminished tread, fallen debris,
overgrown brush, and minor slides that challenge even the most experienced back-
country hiker.
