The recently charred landscape within Miller Canyon brought nutrients back into the soil
to allow forest succession to begin anew.
Trip Description
Head northwest along gated Jeffery Road (4270') past sprawling oaks, peeling red
madrones, and towering Coulter pines. The latter boast the world's heaviest cones.
After a moderate mile-long descent, the road reaches a seasonal stretch of the Miller
Fork, usually dry from May until the first winter rains. In a quarter mile you'll
enter private property, posted by the Tanoak homeowners association. Follow the road
past several private driveways, another seasonal branch of the Miller Fork, and the
Tamarack homes' pond, then descend 0.1 mile to a second gate (1.8 miles, 3400').
Beyond this gate the route enters the Ventana Wilderness.
Continue 0.1 mile along the road until it doglegs sharply right and begins a steep
climb east. The trail begins at this sharp turn, leading 0.1 mile to a junction with an-
other road. Fifty feet down this road, you'll reach a fork. Take the left branch. The
road ends at the Miller Canyon Trail junction (2 miles, 3360').
Miller Canyon Trail branches right 150 feet to another gate. Pass through the
gate for a gentle descent toward a minor gorge that parallels Miller Canyon. The
trail closely follows the Miller Canyon Fault northwest. Contouring above the minor
