DIRECTIONS: To reach Bottchers Gap from Highway 1, turn east on narrow,
paved Palo Colorado Road. The junction lies 2 miles north of Bixby Creek Bridge
and 11.4 miles south of the Carmel Valley Road (County Road G16) junction in
Carmel. Palo Colorado (Spanish for red wood) winds through a redwood-lined
canyon, climbs through oak woodlands and chaparral, and ends at Bottchers Gap, 7.7
miles inland.
VISITOR CENTER: Big Sur Station: (831) 667-2315. The station is on Highway
1, a half mile south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Open daily 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Memori-
al Day through Labor Day, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. the rest of the year.
NEAREST CAMPGROUND: Bottchers Gap Campground (12 sites, $12/night)
provides a picnic table, fire ring, and pedestal grill at each site. There's a maximum
of eight people per site, and sites are granted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
