CHAPTER thirteen
Pacific Valley to San Simeon
State Park
T HIS CHAPTER DESCRIBES state and federal day-use lands from Pacific Valley south to
Sand Dollar Beach, Jade Cove, Ragged Point, Piedras Blancas, Hearst Memorial State
Beach, and San Simeon. This stretch of coast is a premier hiking destination. Trails me-
ander through wind-sculpted pine forests, across slopes of fragrant coastal scrub and
spring wildflowers, and down to driftwood-strewn beaches. You'll also find plenty of
the trademark ocean views that draw people up and down Highway 1.
Pacific Valley to Jade Cove
Pacific Valley's rocky bluffs and rolling prairie overlook a prominent marine terrace
punctuated by archways and pounding surf. Several intriguing trails cut through golden
grasslands and dense coastal shrub to secluded coves and dramatic views. Farther
south off Highway 1, Sand Dollar Beach and Jade Cove offer access to beachcombers,
anglers, surfers, scuba divers, and rock hounds in search of the coveted green gem-
stone.
