LENGTH AND TYPE: 1-mile out-and-back
RATING: Easy
TRAIL CONDITION: Well maintained, good for kids
HIGHLIGHTS: Stroll barefoot along one of Big Sur's finest windswept beaches to commune with the sea.
TO REACH THE TRAILHEAD: The road to Pfeiffer Beach lies at a saddle with two roads
on the west side of Highway 1, a quarter mile south of Big Sur Station and 1.1 miles
north of the Ventana Inn entrance. Turn west on Sycamore Canyon Road, a narrow,
winding stretch that leads 2.2 miles to the beach parking loop. There's a $5 day-use
fee. You'll find water and bathrooms at the trailhead.
TRIP SUMMARY: This hike leads to one of the region's most striking beaches. In spring
the coastal bluffs boast a colorful tapestry of wildflowers, including California poppies,
sticky monkeyflowers, yellow sand verbena, Indian paintbrush, and lupines. Foaming
surf crashes through dramatic nearshore arches, highlighting the gorgeous sunsets.
