In-Depth Information
Still standing along the Oak Grove Trail, the Homestead Cabin was built in 1884 by
homesteader John Pfeiffer. John was 7 years old when his family arrived in Big Sur
in 1869, becoming the first European immigrants to settle here permanently. By the
turn of the century, the Pfeiffers were operating a sawmill and boarding house on the
property. In 1933, John and wife Florence Pfeiffer sold most of the surrounding land
to the state, stipulating that it be preserved as a park. Florence and seven of her chil-
dren are buried in a cemetery near the Homestead Cabin.
