In-Depth Information
Trail Camp is a short jaunt through massive oaks and sycamores along the Big Sur River.
Big Sur is also home to steelhead trout (a rainbow trout that spends part of its life
in the sea), which migrate upstream to spawn and lay eggs. Each spring thousands of
6-inch steelhead smolt venture downstream into the ocean. For every 100 smolt that
reach the sea, fewer than 5% will return as a spawning adult. At dawn and dusk in
summer and fall, watch as dozens of young steelhead leap through the air to enjoy a
banquet of aquatic insects.
When you're ready, return the way you came. In drier months you could cross
the river and head back following the Beach or Creamery Meadow Trails (see fol-
lowing trip description).
