Figure 16.24
A frame of The Beast resampled for DVD. Note the squashing
If DVD is going to be your fl agship release, though, you will want to avoid resampling altogether and render
your animation directly into the correct resolution. As the native DVD formats use nonsquare pixels, this
requires a dip into an arcane setting: the Pixel Aspect Ratio. Rather than go through the formulas for pixel
dimensions and aspect ratios, we will just present four illustrations (Figures 16.25 through 16.28), one for
each combination of aspect ratio and format. These values were arrived at by using the formulas present on
several websites documenting DVD formats and confi rmed by test rendering an animated sphere, opening the
resulting animation in VLC and forcing the correct screen aspect ratio.
WARNING
These Pixel Aspect Ratio values should only be used if you are rendering natively into DVD res-
olution. If you are just using the Sequencer to resample an animation into the correct resolu-
tion, you should not use the PAR settings.
